Introduction to COMSTECH:

OIC-COMSTECH, the Ministerial Standing Committee on Scientific and Technological Cooperation of the OIC (Organization of Islamic Cooperation), was established by the Third Islamic Summit of OIC held at Makkah, Saudi Arabia, in January 1981. The President of Pakistan is the Chairman of COMSTECH. The core mandate of COMSTECH is to strengthen cooperation among OIC Member States in science and technology (S&T) and enhance their capabilities through training in emerging areas, undertake follow-up-actions and implementation of the resolutions of the OIC, and to draw up programs and submit proposals designed to increase the capability of the Muslim countries in science and technology (S&T). The ultimate aim is to build and nourish a scientific culture in addition to using S&T as a major contributor to socio-economic development and rapid industrialization.

Introduction to Gourmet:

Gourmet Foods is among the largest retail chains of food products in the South Asia, with headquarters in Lahore, Pakistan. It has seven processing units across the country and over 100 stores in Lahore only. The company was founded by a visionary entrepreneur Mr. Muhammad Nawaz Chattha in 1987. It has outlets in throughout Pakistan, and has been providing quality products to its customers.

Gourmet is a fast-growing company that started with bakery retail business and then expanded horizontally. Now Gourmet is engaged in different industries such as Beverages, Banking, Catering, Construction, Sugar Mills, Restaurants, Agriculture and News Network. Gourmet also has strong R&D units in the field of food processing, and agriculture.

Objectives:

The objective of the COMSTECH-Gourmet Industrial Internship Program is to foster innovation and research and development (R&D) across diverse industrial sectors, including food processing, engineering, plant operations, recycling, and so forth. This program aims to provide interns with hands-on experience and exposure to cutting-edge technologies and methodologies, thereby enhancing their practical skills and theoretical knowledge. By engaging in real-world projects, interns will contribute to the advancement of industrial processes and the development of sustainable solutions, ultimately driving technological innovation and improving operational efficiencies in the fields of human nutrition and value addition.

Areas of Research:

1- Food Industry: Bakery, Dairy, Ice Cream, Confectionary, Sweets, Beverages.

Production Processes:

  • Gain hands-on experience in the production processes of bakery, dairy, ice cream, confectionary, sweets, and Beverages.
  • Exposure to new product development and quality control measures across all segments.

Supply Chain Management:

  • Understand the supply chain processes from production to retail.
  • Analyze logistics, including cold chain logistics for ice cream, to ensure product quality and availability.

Sales and Distribution:

  • Investigate the sales processes to distributors and retailers, considering margins and market dynamics.
  • Study the order-to-shipping operations to ensure fresh product availability at retail outlets while minimizing expiry and damages.

2- Plant Utilities

To understand the operations of following utilities at production plant

  • Boiler
  • Power House
  • Ammonia Compressor
  • Air Compressor etc.

3- Preform Production

  • End to End Production process of preforms

  • Supply Chain of its raw material till finished goods availability to beverages production plants.

4- Shrink-film

  • Understanding of production process of Shrink warp from scrap samica plastic.

  • Supply Chain of its raw material till finished goods availability to beverages production plants.

5- RPET

  • Recycling of plastic that is used to make packaging, such as plastic bottles and food containers through recycled PET (polyethylene terephthalate) methodology.

  • Supply Chain process to understand its raw material availability and its finish goods supply.

6- Sugar Mill

  • Sugar production process

  • Exposure to sugar supply chain and logistics considering cane procurement to sugar sales.

7- News Network Division:

  • Journalism and reporting exposure.

  • Insight into media production and broadcasting.

Terms of the Internship

  • Applicants must be from an OIC Member Country.
  • Those travelling from outside Pakistan will be eligible for one economy class return air ticket for the entire duration of the Internship.
  • Accommodation and meals will be provided to the selected candidates.
  • The Internships are offered for 4 weeks.
