    Introduction to OIC-COMSTECH:

    OIC-COMSTECH, the Ministerial Standing Committee on Scientific and Technological Cooperation of the OIC (Organization of Islamic Cooperation), was established by the Third Islamic Summit of OIC held at Makkah, Saudi Arabia, in January 1981. The President of Pakistan is the Chairman of OIC-COMSTECH. The core mandate of OIC-COMSTECH is to strengthen cooperation among OIC Member States in science and technology (S&T) and enhance their capabilities through training in emerging areas, undertake follow-up-actions and implementation of the resolutions of the OIC, and to draw up programs and submit proposals designed to increase the capability of the Muslim countries in science and technology (S&T). The ultimate aim is to build and nourish a scientific culture in addition to using S&T as a major contributor to socio-economic development and rapid industrialization.

    Introduction of University of Technology Sarawak (UTS):

    The University of Technology Sarawak (UTS) is a full-fledged university located in Sibu, Sarawak, Malaysia. It was established in 2012 as the University College of Technology Sarawak (UCTS) and was upgraded to a university in 2021. UTS is wholly owned by the State Government of Sarawak through Yayasan Sarawak (Sarawak Foundation).   • COMSTECH – Hunan University of Chinese Medicine (HUCM) Joint Technicians Training Program

    Background:

    The Organization of Islamic Cooperation consists of 57 countries which accounts for 1.9 billion of the global population. A large number of these countries are faced with various challenges, such as poverty, food insecurity, climate change and lack of health facilities. However, one common factor remains in all that they lag far behind in science, technology and innovation in comparison to the developed world. Among these, one issue of prime importance is the need for trained researchers and technical personnels in various fields of science and technology with emphasis on health.

    To meet the above stated challenges, the Hunan University of Chinese Medicine (HUCM) and OIC- COMSTECH will join hands to offer technicians training.

    Objective:

    To overcome the lack of trained researchers in the OIC member states, COSMTECH (the Ministerial Standing Committee on Scientific and Technological Cooperation of the OIC (Organization of Islamic Cooperation)), in collaboration with top ranked university of China, HUCM, proposes technicians training program to provide hands on training on various medical and STEM fields for S &T capacity building.

    Through this collaboration, 20 technicians will be trained at various research centers, and laboratories of HUCM. Technicians will be trained for 2-4 weeks at the various labs/ centers of HUCM.

    Target Beneficiaries:

    This program will benefit researchers and technicians/technologists working in instrumentation sections/laboratories, facilities of teaching institutions, hospitals, R&D laboratories and those who are in need of research training on various or specific sophisticated scientific instruments being used in their relevant fields.

    Eligibility Criteria:
    • For technicians training: The candidate should hold at least diploma of associate engineering, engineering technologist, lab technologist, students at least holding MS degree in STEM fields and laboratory science involved with sophisticated scientific equipment in various STEM fields.
    • The candidate must be a regular employee (endorsed by the institution) of parent university, hospital or research institution.
    • Age limit is 28- 40 years.
    • Nationals of OIC member and observer states can apply.
    • The candidate must sign an agreement with parent institution to serve the parent institution for at least one year on completion of training.
    • Preference is given to women applicants and those working in Least Developed OIC Countries (LDCs) of the OIC member countries.
    Benefits of Training:
    • The research fellow/trainee will be provided with international low-cost airfare, visa fee by COMSTECH.
    • Whereas HUCM will accommodation to incoming scholars / trainees.
    • Trainees will be placed in the relevant laboratories in institution.

  • Programme COMSTECH-CCoE Yémen

    COMSTECH, en collaboration avec l’ambassade de la République du Yémen à Islamabad, a lancé en juin 2022 le « Programme COMSTECH-CCoE Yémen » pour le renforcement des capacités des scientifiques yéménites. S.E. Mohammed Motahar Alashabi, l’Ambassadeur du Yémen a eu une série de réunions avec le Coordinateur Général COMSTECH pour lancer ce programme.

    Dans la première phase, COMSTECH a offert 50 bourses aux ressortissants yéménites. Ces bourses ont été offertes par le Centre International des Sciences Chimiques et Biologiques (ICCBS) (Université de Karachi), l’Université de Lahore, Lahore, et l’Académie des services de santé (HSA), Islamabad, institutions membres du Consortium d’excellence COMSTECH (CCoE).

    Au cours de la première phase, 17 boursiers ont terminé avec succès leur bourse dans les institutions respectives et sont retournés au Yémen pour servir la nation.

    Sur ces 17 bourses, 11 ont été accordées à l’Université de Lahore et 3 bourses ont été accordées chacune à l’ICCBS et à la HSA.

    Dans la deuxième phase, COMSTECH a offert 80 bourses supplémentaires et deux événements de formation sur place au Yémen dans les domaines de la santé, de l’agriculture et du climat avec le soutien de l’Université de Lahore, du Centre international des sciences chimiques et biologiques (ICCBS), de l’Académie des services de santé, de l’Université d’agriculture du Sindh Tandojam, du Centre national de recherche agricole, de l’Université de gestion et de technologie, Université de Sargodha et Université Supérieure.

  • Programme de coopération scientifique ICGEB-COMSTECH

    Le programme COMSTECH-ICGEB, lancé en janvier 2022, offre des subventions de recherche, des bourses et un programme de chaire de professeur invité pour organiser des ateliers sur les technologies émergentes pour le renforcement des capacités des États de l’OCI dans divers aspects de la biotechnologie et du génie génétique.

    Dans le cadre de ce programme conjoint, 11 projets de recherche collaborative (CRP) ont été financés en 2022-23, pour un montant de 200 000 euros. Sur ces 11 bourses, 5 ont reçu 20 000 euros chacune, 5 autres ont pris chacune 17 000 euros et 1 projet a reçu 15 000 euros. Certains de ces projets ont été menés à bien et d’autres, qui sont en cours, seront terminés d’ici août 2025. Ces subventions ont été reçues par des chercheurs d’Algérie (1), d’Égypte (1), d’Iran (1), de Jordanie (1), du Koweït (1), de Malaisie (2), du Pakistan (2), de Tunisie (1) et de Turquie (1). Une attention particulière a été accordée à l’équilibre entre les sexes et 45 % (5 projets) des femmes scientifiques ont obtenu des subventions sur 11.

    Le deuxième volet de ce programme était celui des bourses. Ce segment a été divisé en deux parties : l’une : des bourses de courte durée dans lesquelles les boursiers ont rejoint les laboratoires de l’ICGEB pour effectuer leurs travaux de recherche et, d’autre part, il s’agissait de bénéficier de programmes de mobilité sud-sud.

    Dans le cadre des bourses de courte durée à l’ICGEB, 8 bourses ont été attribuées à des chercheurs du Cameroun (2), d’Égypte (1), d’Iran (1), de Jordanie (1), du Nigeria (2), du Pakistan (1). Cinq bourses sur huit ont été accordées à des femmes scientifiques. Pour des raisons personnelles, 3 boursiers ont renoncé à cette opportunité. Les 5 autres sont en cours et seront terminées d’ici août 2025.

    Dans le deuxième niveau d’offre de bourses – SMART Fellowships (mobilité sud-sud), six bourses ont été proposées. Des chercheurs du Cameroun, d’Égypte, d’Irak, du Nigeria, du Soudan et de Tunisie ont obtenu ces bourses pour rejoindre des institutions de recherche en Hongrie, en Afrique du Sud, en Arabie saoudite, en Algérie, au Zimbabwe et en Turquie. Pour des raisons imprévues, un homme a renoncé à cette opportunité. Deux femmes scientifiques ont obtenu ces bourses sur les six.

    Dans le segment des bourses, 14 bourses ont été attribuées, dont 4 boursiers ont renoncé à l’opportunité, et 10 sont en cours, dont certaines ont terminé et les autres seront terminées d’ici août 2025.

    Le troisième volet de ce programme conjoint a consisté à organiser des ateliers sur les technologies émergentes pour le renforcement des capacités des États de l’OCI. Trois ateliers étaient prévus en Malaisie, au Nigéria et au Pakistan. Deux événements (qui se tiendront au Nigeria et en Malaisie) ont été organisés avec succès en février et août 2024 respectivement et le troisième événement n’a pas pu être organisé.

    Le Centre international pour le génie génétique et la biotechnologie (ICGEB) est basé à Trieste (Italie), Durban (Afrique du Sud) et New Delhi (Inde). COMSTECH est un Comité ministériel permanent de l’OCI sur la coopération scientifique et technologique basé à Islamabad, au Pakistan.

These scholarships are offered to candidates from OIC Member States in Africa and Muslim Minorities in other countries in Africa.

    Background:

    Conflicts around the world have led to the displacement of millions of people, resulting in a significant impact on research and higher education for those affected. Armed conflicts, civil wars, political instability, and persecution force people to flee their homes and seek refuge in other countries or within their own borders. Many refugees were involved in research or higher education in their home countries prior to displacement. The conflict disrupts their research projects, academic careers, and scientific contributions.

    This program aims to support displaced and refugee scientists to stay up-to-date in their field, maintain meaningful careers, and be in a position to help rebuild their countries, once conditions allow. Until then, these professionals can be valuable assets for the countries in which they arrive.

    Production Processes:

    • Gain hands-on experience in the production processes of bakery, dairy, ice cream, confectionary, sweets, and Beverages.
    • Exposure to new product development and quality control measures across all segments.

    Supply Chain Management:

    • Understand the supply chain processes from production to retail.
    • Analyze logistics, including cold chain logistics for ice cream, to ensure product quality and availability.

    Sales and Distribution:

    • Investigate the sales processes to distributors and retailers, considering margins and market dynamics.
    • Study the order-to-shipping operations to ensure fresh product availability at retail outlets while minimizing expiry and damages.

    2- Plant Utilities

    To understand the operations of following utilities at production plant

    • Boiler
    • Power House
    • Ammonia Compressor
    • Air Compressor etc.

    3- Preform Production

    • End to End Production process of preforms

    • Supply Chain of its raw material till finished goods availability to beverages production plants.

    4- Shrink-film

    • Understanding of production process of Shrink warp from scrap samica plastic.

    • Supply Chain of its raw material till finished goods availability to beverages production plants.

    5- RPET

    • Recycling of plastic that is used to make packaging, such as plastic bottles and food containers through recycled PET (polyethylene terephthalate) methodology.

    • Supply Chain process to understand its raw material availability and its finish goods supply.

    6- Sugar Mill

    • Sugar production process

    • Exposure to sugar supply chain and logistics considering cane procurement to sugar sales.

    7- News Network Division:

    • Journalism and reporting exposure.

    • Insight into media production and broadcasting.

    Terms of the Internship

    • Applicants must be from an OIC Member Country.
    • Those travelling from outside Pakistan will be eligible for one economy class return air ticket for the entire duration of the Internship.
    • Accommodation and meals will be provided to the selected candidates.
    • The Internships are offered for 4 weeks.
