Abstract:
GDP or Gross Domestic Product is regarded as a nation’s main economic health-check. It is also an influential ranking of prosperity. Every quarter, the announcement is keenly watched by governments, financial markets and media. But GDP is also an unforgiving metric, and is not helpful for low and middle income countries. It rewards environmental degradation, prevents countries from spending on important policy priorities, and is associated with widening inequality. In this talk, science writer Ehsan Masood will describe how GDP became what he calls the ‘world’s most powerful formula’ and why it needs to be reformed.
