3-Day Workshop on Synthetic Biology and Its Dual Use

3rd to 5th February, 2011

Application Deadline:  7 January, 2011 for foreign candidates & 15 January, 2011 for candidates from Pakistan

Introduction

Synthetic biology is the engineering of biological material: the synthesis of complex, biologically based systems which display functions that do not exist in nature. This engineering perspective may be applied at all levels of the hierarchy of biological structures – from individual molecules to whole cells, tissues and organisms. In essence, synthetic biology will enable the design of ‘biological systems’ in a rational and systematic way.

The ability of synthetic biology to produce known, modified or new microorganisms designed to be hostile to humans is a major concern, and has been demonstrated by the synthesis of the polio virus and the pandemic Spanish Flu virus of 1918. Technical advances in modern molecular biology have increased the risk that research could be used against us by those with malicious intent. It is important that biologists increase their awareness of biosecurity issues and learn to assess their research in terms of modern security concerns to minimize that possibility.

Objectives of the Workshop

  • Discuss recent developments in the field of Synthetic Biology
  • Discuss the main challenges & possible solutions.
  • Role of youth in addressing dual use research issue.
  • Education about the risks of, and guidance on best practice for, synthetic genomic experiments.
  • Bring together biochemists, mathematicians and molecular biologists from OIC member states to promote research in the field.

Targeted Participants

Young biological researchers & post graduate scholars from public & private sectors universities and research institutes actively involved in biological and medical research.

Selection of the Participants

The relevance of candidates’ present job as researcher will be the main criteria for selection. Participants planning to attend the course in private capacity are requested to submit a recommendation letter/ No objection certificate from the head of department along with the application form.

Local Hospitality

COMSTECH will provide local hospitality to the selected participants in its Guest House.

Application

There is no registration fee for participation in the workshop.

Please send your application form to Ms. Hanifa Beg along with recommendation letter/NOC by fax to +92-51-9205264 or email hanifa@comstech.org or comstech@comstech.org
