Consultation Workshop being organized by COMSTECH, FAO and PARC
COMSTECH, in collaboration with Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the Pakistan Agriculture Research Council (PARC) is holding a Consultation Workshop for Development of a multi-national Project proposal on “Promotion of Plant Genetic Resources: Use, Varietal Development and Integration in the Seed System”.
The Workshop is scheduled on 11th of April, 2019 at the office of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) office Islamabad. Focal persons nominated by the respective governments from five OIC Member countries; namely, Azerbaijan, Iraq, Oman, Jordan and Pakistan have confirmed their participation in the workshop.
This activity is in continuation of COMSTECH efforts to address food security, farm productivity and preservation of plant biodiversity as key priorities of OIC member states.
As a first step towards the afore mentioned goals, COMSTECH, in collaboration with PARC organized an international workshop on “Plant Genetic Resources and Genebank Operations Management System” in May 2018, that was participated by scientists from 15 OIC member states. These experts after thorough deliberations recommended extensive cooperative efforts for:
a. Strengthening of germplasm collection
b. Promoting evaluation and utilization of plant genetic resources for varietal development and the integration of their seed system in the member states
c. Promoting technical cooperation between member states for Genebank establishment/management
d. Capacity development programs in the area.
The Workshop scheduled on 11th of April, 2019, would include:
- country reports by participants on the state of PGR preservation
- deliberation on the concept paper prepared by the Pakistan Agriculture Research Council (PARC) and the FAO representative, with the objective to develop a multi-national proposal to meet the goals listed in preceding para as items a to d.
