COMSTECH Award in Biology

Dr. Ramy Karam Aziz Henein
Cairo University

Dr. Ramy K. Aziz is currently a professor and chair of the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at the Faculty of Pharmacy-Cairo University. He earned his PhD in microbiology and immunology from the University of Tennessee Health Science Center, USA, in 2005, and, since then performed postdoctoral research at leading US institutions, including the University of Chicago and the University of California San Diego. His research interests span molecular epidemiology, systems biology of microbial pathogens, evolution and emergence of bacterial pathogenesis and resistance, microbial and bacteriophage genomics and metagenomics, and human/environmental microbiome research.

He published a book, 7 book sections, 75 articles in peer-reviewed journals, in addition to blogs and web pages oriented to transformative education and science communication. He pioneered the fields of microbial and bacteriophage genome analysis and the nascent field of “pharmacomicrobiomics,” which studies drug-microbiome interactions. Most recently, he co-founded the Egyptian Genome and Microbiome Center (Cairo University).


COMSTECH Award in Chemistry

Dr. Engin Umut Akkaya
Bilkent University

Dr. Akkaya is a leading Chemist from Turkey. He is spearheading Creative Chemistry Research Lab, Department of Chemistry & UNAM, Bilkent University. The work carried out in his lab is considered groundbreaking among the scientific community worldwide, as he has moved from heavy atom-free photosensitization to activatable agents to controlled chemical generation of singlet oxygen for PDT. His research has been published in leading journals, such as Angewandte Chemie, Journal of the American Chemical Society, Chemical Communications and Organic Letters. His publications received >7000 citations at a rate of 68.4 per paper and H-Index of 47 at the time of filling the application in 2017. He has supervised 8 Post-docs, 17 PhD and 60 MS fellows from 1996-2017. He is fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) and recipient of a number of national awards (TUBITAK, TUSEB-Sancar, Parlar Found).

Dr. Akkaya is a renowned Chemist in transforming photodynamic therapy concepts and application of molecular logic gates as information processing therapeutic agents.

Farrokh aminifarYoung Researcher Award (Shared ½)

Dr. Farrokh Aminifar
University of Tehran

Dr. Farrokh Aminifar received the B.Sc. degree (Hon.) from Iran University of Science and Technology, in 2005, and the M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees (Hons.) from Sharif University of Technology, in 2007 and 2010, respectively, all in electrical power engineering. He joined University of Tehran in 2012 where he is currently an associate professor. Dr. Aminifar has also been collaborating with Robert W. Galvin Center for Electricity Innovation with Illinois Institute of Technology, Chicago, IL, as a senior research associate since 2009. His research interests include wide-area measurement systems, smart grid initiatives, and resilience of cyber-physical systems. Farrokh has co-authored more than 150 journal and conference papers and a book in the state-of-the-art topics of power engineering. He is serving as editor, guest editor, and guest editor-in-chief for several IEEE/IET journals. Dr. Aminifar is recipient of numerous national and international awards among them is the Outstanding Young Scientist Award of Iran National Academy of Science.

Dr. Mehmet Atilla Tasdelen
Yalova University

Dr. Mehmet Atilla Tasdelen completed B.Sc. (2000) degree at Chemistry Department of Ege University, M.Sc (2002) and Ph.D (2008) degrees at Polymer Science and Technology Programme of Istanbul Technical University under the supervision of Prof. Yusuf Yagci. He joined Yalova University, Department of Polymer Engineering in July, 2010 as an assistant professor and in November 2018 he was promoted to full professor. Dr. Tasdelen research is intensively focused on the design, synthesis and characterization of novel architecturally hybrid, complex, functional and well defined macromolecular structures via various polymerization techniques. He is co-author of more than 100 original research papers and several book chapter and supervised 6 Ph.D. and 14 M.Sc. theses. He also serves as an associate editor of Journal of the Turkish Chemical Society, Section A: Chemistry and Chemistry Africa, as a member of the editorial board and reviewer of many international scientific journals.

Dr. Salah Sabry Ahmed Obayya
Zewail City of Science and Technology

Dr. Salah S. A. Obayya, now Chair Professor and Founding Director of Center for Photonics and Smart Materials (CPSM). Previously, he was the Vice Chairman of ZC (President) and Director-General of Research Institutes at the same institution. Prior to ZC, he held several academic position in UK from 2000 until 2012, where his most recent position was Chair Professor of Photonics and Research Center Director at University of South Wales, UK. He has published 232 journal publications, mostly in OSA, IEEE and IET/IEE, authored 3 books, 252 conference papers in international conference in photonics, supervised to successful completion 35 PhD students and 15 postdoctoral research fellows. As remarkable recognition of his research achievements, he was the recipient of many national and international awards and recognitions such as Doctor of Science (Dsc) degree in photonics from City, University of London, a degree awarded for international distinction in Photonics.

Dr. Ibrahim El-Sherbiny
Zewail City of Science and Technology

Dr. Ibrahim El-Sherbiny is Professor of smart nanomaterials and nanomedicine, founding chairman of Nanoscience program, and director of the Center of Materials Science at Zewail City of Science and Technology. El-Sherbiny earned his PhD in Smart drug delivery from Massey University, New Zealand in 2007. He received several prestigeous awards including, for instance, the State Award of Excellence in Advanced Sciences 2019, Gold Medal from 46th International Exhibition of Innovations (Geneva, 2018), Shouman Award in Nanotechnology, and the State Incentive Award in Science, and he was honored as distinguished inventor by Egyptain President and many countries including France, Switzerland, South Korea, Malaysia, Romania, and Cooperation Council of Gulf States. He is a named inventor on 24 patents in US, UK, Europe and Egypt. He has more than 110 scientific papers published in high impact peer-reviewed journals over the last ten years plus more than 130 in international conferences. He is the author of three books plus contribution to more than 20 other books plus more than 15 review articles.

Dr. Maha Nasr Sayed Aly

Dr. Maha Nasr is an Associate Professor of Pharmaceutics, Faculty of Pharmacy, Ain Shams University. Dr. Maha has been awarded the state encouragement prize in the field of advanced technological sciences serving the medical sciences 2017, Obada prize for distinguished researchers under 40 years 2018, and the ACDIMA-Egypt prize 2018. She is also Africa Science Leadership program ASLP fellow, a TWAS Arab regional office and African academy of Sciences young affiliate, a Next Einstein Forum (NEF) fellow, and an elected member of the Global young academy (GYA) and the Arab-German academy of Sciences and Humanities (AGYA). Dr. Maha Nasr has published more than 59 international papers, and is currently a peer reviewer in 67 journals and is serving as editor or among the Editorial board of 10 international journals.

Dr. Mohamed H. Alkordi
Zewail City of Science and Technology

Dr. Alkordi graduated from Alexandria University-Egypt in 2005, and then joined the University of South Florida-USA working on his Ph.D. in materials chemistry which he concluded at 2010. Alkordi has then moved to King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) as a postdoctoral fellow and one of the founding members of the Center for Advanced Membranes and Porous Materials there. In 2012 Alkordi joined the newly inaugurated Zewail City of Science and Technology as one of the founding faculty members, where he helped in establishing the center for materials science and now is the director of the materials science program at Zewail City. Alkordi’s research interests are mainly within the area of microporous materials for applications in gas storage, catalysis, CO2 capture, and energy conversion and storage processes. Alkordi was the recipient of the Egyptian State Encouragement Award in 2017, and the Presidential accolade-First grade in recognition to his recent scientific contributions. Alkordi was selected to join the Editorial board of PLOS ONE, and frequently serves as an international reviewer for many scientific journals, and was recently acknowledged as being among TOP 1% reviewers in Materials Science by Publons.

Dr. Abdelaali Boudjemaa
Hassiba Benbouali University of Chlef

Dr. Abdelaali Boudjemaa is Associate Professor of Physics, and Dean of the Faculty of Exact Sciences and Informatics at the University of Chlef, Algeria. His research focuses on the theory of quantum gases, condensed matter physics and on the nonlinear physics. He leads a research group exploring several aspects of ultracold gases.  Dr. Boudjemma has published more than 35 papers, is the author of the book “Degenerate Bose Gas at Finite Temperatures”, LAMBERT Academic Publishing, Germany (2017), and has edited 02 proceedings of the international school on quantum gases, Chlef, Algeria (2012 and (2018). He has presented 30 talks and seminars. He acts regularly as a reviewer for many leading international scientific journals. Additionally, he has occupied diverse administrative positions and scientific responsibilities. Dr. Boudjemma was awarded the prize of Best Young Researcher in Algeria (2012).  Recently, he received the 2017 Algerian Paper of the Year Award.
